Buchesworde (11th century), Buckworth (Modern).

Buckworth rises southwards from the Alconbury Brook, across Fay Way to the village which occupies high ground with extensive views across the fertile valley. Buckworth was formerly a celebrated hunting centre.

Buckworth is recorded in Domesday Book as the property of the Earl of Ow, or Eu, in Normandy, whose estates in 1186, came to an heiress Alice Countess of Eu, at whose death in 1247 they escheated to the Crown, her son and heir being an alien and incapable of inheriting them. It was held under the Earls of Eu by a family known indiscriminately as de Dunmow or de Buckworth, and they seem to have held it after 1247 in capite. In 1337 it was the property of John Lord Mauduit, from whom it descended through the families of Green and Mordaunt to Lewis Lord Mordaunt, who died in 1601.

After passing through various hands, it came to the Duncombes, about 1690, and descending to their heirs the Shaftos, was sold by them to the late Mr Mills, whose granddaughters, Mrs Cholmondeley and Mrs Fox, were Ladies of the Manor in 1910.

The church is a fine building of mixed styles, the tower and spire being of excellent Early English workmanship. The well-ornamented tower and fine spire with twelve gabled lights of All Saints Church have been a notable landmark for 600 years. Except for some 12th century traces the church dates principally from the Decorated and Perpendicular periods. The list of rectors goes back to the year 1225.

Buckworth is one of the parishes of the District of Huntingdonshire, whose administrative centre is Huntingdon, the other principle towns being St Ives home of the Chapel on the Bridge, St Neots the largest town in the County of Cambridgeshire, the Roman town of Godmanchester and Ramsey site of the former Abbey.
